MONTBLANC
In days gone by, people believed that if a person touched an object, that object would form a bond with a part of their soul. Today, such a thought seems almost absurd ... Until you enter the realm of Montblanc´s master craftsmen.
WRITING INSTRUMENTS
Symphony of Passion
The baritone resonance of a barrel made of precious resin - or even rose gold - blends brilliantly with the soprano chime of a gold-plated clip. Montblanc craftsmen allocate the materials for these exquisite writing instruments in the same way that composers assign the perfect notes and tones to tell their stories. At the heart of this lies the nib – the keynote - where the soul resides.
Montblanc nibs - made of 18 K gold, flexible and as impressive as notes on a stave - are rolled, stamped and given their characteristic heart shape and hole, from which the music of ink flows forth. The nib is pressed and engraved with Montblanc’s trademark star and the number 4810 - Mont Blanc's height in metres - which also symbolises the company’s soaring success that began a century ago.
A Composer Listens
To create the perfect nib for every writing instrument, 35 work stages are needed, for which Montblanc artisans require absolute silence, patience and expertise. Only after the craftsman has shaped the nib and filled the writing instrument with ink can he begin the precise process of listening to the creation in progress and checking for any imperfections in the score.
In the stillness, as the nib begins to whisper its story onto the paper, the composer tunes his ears to pick up any hint of dissonance. Once the keynote has been perfected and is ready to make its debut, the individual parts of the writing instrument come into play, the notes are secured on the stave, and the first flow of ink brings about the overture - a writing instrument is born.
Artisan-Studio Hamburg
Traditional craftsmanship and flawless manufacturing technique, handed down from generation to generation, come alive in the Artisan Studio of Montblanc’s headquarters in Hamburg. Nestled within the studio is an orchestra of perfectly tuned machines, with which the Montblanc artisans carefully compose these sophisticated writing instruments.
Pieces that Breathe
While Montblanc’s exquisite timepieces keep track of the precious moments that embody our life stories, they are also living bodies in themselves. A timepiece’s individual segments - its wheels, spring, dial and movement – are proud and resilient organs which thrive beneath its skin, a case made of stainless steel or even sapphire crystal.
Every single part of a Montblanc watch functions flawlessly and harmoniously long after the maker has left its side. And its soul remembers this connection, which keeps its body breathing, performing and waiting for the moment to accompany you on your journey through life.
Generators of Art
With an ocular firmly nestled against his eye, the finely skilled Montblanc watchmaker assembles his timepiece with experienced and meticulous care - not even the slightest defect or blemish escapes his trained gaze. He bevels his stories into the edges of the fragments, and he flame fires his soul into each tiny screw.
The watchmaker’s soul is transplanted into the new and perfect body, a practice that takes up to 300 hours, after which a miracle comes to pass: the balance of a mechanical movement is finally fitted and begins to oscillate. A new life has been created - a breathing piece of art that is flawless and pure.
Le Locle – Generations of Swiss Tradition
At Montblanc, watches are manufactured 1,000 metres above sea level, in the mountains of Jura, Switzerland, far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life. Although this is the home of time, time seems to stand still here: Le Locle is the birthplace of traditional Swiss watchmaking and has been home to the world’s finest watchmakers for centuries.
Le Locle is also the home of Montblanc Montre S.A. All timepieces are born in a picturesque art nouveau villa built in 1906, the same year that the foundations for the company Montblanc were laid.
